DESIGN AND CRAFTING OF

NOVEL FURNITURE PIECES

APPROACH

Furniture can be regarded as the bridge between human and space. A sort of extension of ourselves that lives stationary ready to serve a meaningful purpose. When these objects are designed and made well, they can become some of the longest lasting relationships we share with a man-made product.

Today’s designers face the challenge of creating products that avoid landfills, and focusing my creativity and energy into crafting enduring quality pieces of furniture is how I honor that promise.

The approach with every project is to design and make an honest piece. One that utilizes geometry and materials proven timeless, but also stays relevant through the use of processes, technology, and ergonomic research employed by modern designers.

AURA MEDIA CONSOLE

This work celebrates and combines two of the most significant interests in my design career; furniture and audio. As it has been apparent in recent years, vinyl has made a comeback as an audio format. Vinyl turns the listening experience into physical engagement, and this piece amplifies that into a gratifying ritual. From opening the cabinet to select a record, to the dropping of the needle. The Aura Media Console acts as the catalyst for the entire experience to come together in beautiful fashion, and gives every component its rightful place.

The console is made of American black walnut, and gunmetal steel as a backbone for the base. The design features the ‘rule of thirds’ throughout and a touch of asymmetry for added visual interest. Press-to-open hardware on doors and drawer for minimalist look and sophisticated feel.

In essence, this piece is the first prototype of its kind. Future iterations of the Aura Media Console will integrate a hi-fi set of speakers, and multiple ways to incorporate it into an environment. Stay tuned!

NIDO SLAT BENCH

The slats and legs of the bench are made of 100% Jatoba hardwood. Complemented by elegant geometry and sleek in proportions, yet very strong and sturdy thanks to the natural wood properties and thoughtful design.

Each leg was turned to precision on a lathe from a solid piece of wood, and the entire piece finished in satin lacquer to bring out the natural warm tones Jatoba is known for.

The subtle design is contrasted by one attention-grabbing detail; the nesting relationship between the outer slats and round legs. All elements combined result on a piece that is effortlessly alluring, and simply put… beautiful.

ESTRATOS SOFA & LOVESEAT

This is a set made for the contemporary open living space. Most sofas, no matter the cost, are designed to be pushed against a wall or another piece of furniture to hide their lack-luster back side. The Estratos set was developed to be front and center of any living space, and allow the users to experience the design 360 degrees.

Each frame is made of 100% American white oak in generous yet sleek proportions, and features attention-grabbing joinery throughout. The fabric used is removable and washable for practicality. The seat cushions are made of the highest quality medium density foam, and the backrest cushions are filled with a down/polyester blend for great comfort.

The goal with this project was to create the perfect balance of design and comfort, and it wasn’t easy. It took several cushion concepts and thorough ergonomic research, but the end result did not disappoint. The set offers excellent comfort and quality for the user, and vast scalability potential for the maker.

LUNA COFFEE TABLE

This table rose out of necessity to break the pattern; a pattern of straight lines and angles found too often in contemporary living spaces. Contrasting qualities like a textured patina, sweeping contours, and suspended geometry act as functional art in a space meant for modern living.

It is defined by the term “Primitive Modernism” in design and materials, but ironically, the means of production are very much relevant today. This project marks the first time as a maker, that a machine executes the vision, possible by horizontal cooperation of fabrication abilities. The mold used to cast the top, was cut using a CNC machine and moisture-proofed for production use.

The base of the table can be considered a process and object independent from the top. It was made uniquely for its sculptural qualities to commemorate the first table, and lighter versions of the base are currently underway. The flexibility of an interchangeable base has been part of the vision throughout the project. Stay tuned for future variations!

SAN MIGUEL PLANTERS

The value plants bring to a living space is often understated yet so vital. The intent of this project was to highlight and celebrate our connection to the flora in our homes by designing a contemporary planter with a classic connection. The final composition is a blend of light yet grounded geometry, combined with natural and man-made materials. Two distinct sets were produced; American black walnut for one set, and solid white oak and hickory veneer for the other. The wood species chosen contrast and complement the natural beauty of the plants in each specific set.

The walnut boxes are made of excess strips that would otherwise go unused, and they meet at a 45° angle at each corner for a distinctive look. All planters are topped by a piece of polished solid surface to protect the wood from accidental spills during watering.
